Friday night, the St. Paul Saints packed 9,312 people into Midway Stadium (capacity: 6,069). How, you ask? They set up snow fences in the outfield and let folks sit on the warning track. Very 1904-style.
However, that won't in any way be the Saints' most fun promotion of the weekend. On the heels of Billy Donovan Night in Fort Meyers comes "Being Jason Giambi" night at Midway Stadium. Let's let the Saints official website tell you about it:
Each fan attending the Saints game on Saturday, July 7, will have the choice between being “probed” by George Mitchell or being “suspender’d” by Bud Selig.Oh, that's just wonderful. Hopefully the predicted 95˚ heat won't keep folks away.
Outside the front gates of Midway Stadium, USA Today reporters will interview fans, looking for a good quote about past indiscretions.
After making seemingly innocuous comments about past substance abuse, fans will enter the ballpark and make the same choice Jason Giambi currently faces: sit down with George Mitchell (from Roseville, Minnesota ) or face disciplinary action from Commissioner Bud Selig.
If fans agree to sit with Mr. Mitchell and spill the beans about their experiences with performance enhancement, they will be rewarded with an opportunity to win a 1991 Ford Probe. They will likely be asked to give up the names of other fans who have unnaturally improved their performance.
Fans who decide against talking will be “suspender’d” by the Commissioner’s office. The first 500 fans who choose not to be “probed” will receive a pair of Bud Selig Suspenders.
“Jason Giambi is the first player to come forward on his own, for which I give him credit and this is the beginning of the healing process,” said Saints President Mike Veeck. “Our fans will get a little taste of what it’s like to be faced with the same difficult decision as Mr. Giambi. We hope the experience isn’t too uncomfortable for them.”
The Saints will also have union officials at the front gate, trying to keep fans from talking to Mitchell.
