Notes: USA 2-4 Czech Rep [World Cup 2010]

UNITED STATES 2:4 CZECH REPUBLIC

The World Cup begins in South Africa in just 16 days, and the US team is making preparations and playing warm-up games. They'll take on Turkey this Saturday, fly to South Africa on Sunday, then play Australia over there on the Saturday before the World Cup begins. But before any of this, they were in Hartford on Tuesday to take on the Czech Republic, who failed to qualify (and finished behind Slovenia, who the USA will play in Group C.)

30 men are currently included on the American squad, 23 of whom will be on the final team. With some of the biggest names - Tim Howard, Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, etc. - sitting Tuesday's match out, the match was billed as a chance for players on the "bubble" to prove they should be included.

(You may remember that the Czechs whacked the USA 3-0 in the team's first game of the '06 World Cup. The USA was terrible that day; I tend to overreact, but my review, in which I gave up on 2006 and started looking forward to this year, wasn't far off.)

So what did we learn on Tuesday? A few notes:

  • It was Oguchi Onyewu's first game back after being out seven months with a knee injury. He looked like a man who hasn't played for seven months. Everybody has him penciled in as a starting center-back, only because he's been there for a few years now, but he doesn't look ready to go. (Playing 65 minutes the week before the team leaves for the tournament will not convince anyone.)
  • The defense was terrible. (Conditions normal.) More on this in a moment.
  • DaMarcus Beasley has fallen out of favor lately, but I thought he was the only decent wide American player on Tuesday. He was all over the left wing of the pitch, especially on defense.
  • Wondering what you can do to help American soccer? I suggest you start, somehow, developing outside backs for the team. I don't know how to do this. Clearly nobody does, because everyone that plays left or right back for the USA is awful, just terrible. Jonathan Bornstein, Steve Cherundolo, Heath Pearce - they were all terrible on Tuesday. And at least two of those players will be on the final squad. GAAAAH!
  • Maurice Edu scored a scrappy goal, which was nice, but had to play center back late in the game... and was really quite bad. Let us hope we never see this again.
  • I thought Stuart Holden's free kicks were pretty good. I thought everything else he did was pretty useless.
  • Speaking of useless: Eddie Johnson and Sasha Kljestan, everybody!
  • I really hope that Herculez Gomez is on the final team, because HIS NAME IS HERCULEZ GOMEZ. (And yes, the first name is spelled with a z. THAT. IS. TREMENDOUZ.)
  • Clarence Goodson has a tiny head, looks like DJ Qualls, and is not very good at kicking a soccer ball. Unfortunately, the last of these makes him fit right in with the rest of the USA defense.
  • I think we learned something about Jose Torres: He's not bad when you put him in central midfield. We know from previous experience, though, that if you put him outside - say, on the left side of midfield - you might as well play with ten men.
I have not really noted much about the game itself, only because the 4-2 American loss didn't really matter. It featured a couple of scrappy set-piece goals from Edu and Gomez, plus a large quantity of comical defending from all American quarters. (Special awards to Pearce, Bornstein, and Goodson.)

The real truth: we'll likely know much, much more after the Turkey and Australia matches than we do now.

Weekend Links

As I'm headed to the Twins game this afternoon (presuming, of course, that the rain ever stops), it's probably fitting that this week's Weekend Links have a ton of Twins content - plus the usual random assortment of other topics. Join me over at RandBall, if you will.

I, Darko [Canis Hoopus]

This week at Canis Hoopus, I'm writing posts from Darko Milicic's point of view. You might say that I am deflecting, that I will do anything to stop thinking about the draft lottery. (You would be right.)

The post: I, Darko, Want To Stay in Minnesota

Join me over there, won't you?

Twins 8, Toronto 3 [Twinkie Town]

I just this minute finished writing the game recap of the Twins' 8-3 victory in Toronto. (It's all about the comedic fielding of Lyle Overbay.)

While you're here: learn a little something about the Jays, or follow Orlando Hudson inside the Twins clubhouse.

Update

No weekend links this weekend, as Mr. Rand is in Arizona. (Presumably, he will be deported for "looking too Scandinavian.")

Next weekend, if you happen to be at the Twins-Brewers series at Target Field, you can see something else I've been working on this week. I wrote the "Dugout Splinters", part of the scorecard and Twins Magazine and a production of the GameDay Magazine folks. See your local program vendor for details.

Who Should The Wolves Send to the Lottery? [Canis Hoopus]

Though the post is several days old, the question is no less urgent: who should the Wolves send to the draft lottery? Nothing's worked so far, which is why we need to think outside the box. Christian Laettner, anyone? (Okay, I just made jokes, like usual.)

Twinkie Town Links

Monday was yet another off day for the Twins, and so, my Twinkie Town posts were necessarily a little less topical than usual. Instead, I ended up penning an essay about why we build ballparks, as well as taking a poll about the team's backup catcher options.

As always: please click on through.

Weekend Links [RandBall]

I think that this week's edition of the Weekend Links at RandBall might have fit better on Paul Douglas's blog. All weather, all the time! (Plus, there's a few Twins links too.)

Twins vs. Tigers [Twinkie Town]

All three of my Twinkie Town posts on Monday were about the Tigers, in one way or another. In the morning, I took a quick glance at three rookies who have been everyday parts of the Detroit lineup.

Later, a short preview of Monday night's game - followed, of course, by a recap of the 10-4 Twins win. (It was the perfect night to write - a quick game that was effectively decided early, and plus the home team won, which always makes the words flow a bit easier.)

Weekend Links [RandBall]

Another edition of the weekend links, in which I muse about television timeouts. Plus: Twins, soccer, and fish tossing!
